HAMBURG
ASHORE AND ABOARD
City Tour
Monday
5 October 2009
(1000 - 1330)

The
metropolis of Hamburg is a mighty industrial and trading center,
and, above all, an absolutely enchanting city. The people in Hamburg
are proud of their port, which is ranked No. 5 in the world and
No. 2 in Europe. Culture, history, modern architecture, nature,
both on land and on water: Hamburg has lots to offer for every taste!
And some of it can be seen during the city tour, accompanied by
experienced English-speaking guides.
Discover
and enjoy Landungsbrücken, the historical
banks with the typical old Hanseatic brick houses, the Speicherstadt
(warehouse area), the Kontorhäuser (traditional
office buildings), the shopping malls, the romantic Alster
lake, the Rathaus (town hall), the famous Reeperbahn
- where the Beatles started out -, the fish market, the old tunnel
beneath the river Elbe and the Michel, the local
nickname for the imposing St. Michaels church. From there we will
walk to Krameramtsstuben which is a complex of
original widows’ houses in the 17th century-style. The flats
were let to old people and widows until 1969. A beautiful piece
of old-Hamburg is preserved in these typical residential homes.
After
this two hour guided bus tour, we will go on an
approximately one hour harbour boat tour.

Experience
one of the biggest ports of the world from the water and discover
(pending on the tide) the canals leading through the warehouses.
A highlight of the tour is a view of Hamburg’s newest sensation:
the Elbphilharmonie – a concert hall still
under construction which is set to become the outstanding landmark
of modern Hamburg.
